Press Release  Treasurer Goldberg’s Women in Finance Fellowship Finishes Summer 2022 Series

BOSTON – The State Treasurer’s Office of Economic Empowerment (OEE) concluded its sixth year of the Women in Finance Fellowship. This year’s nine-week fellowship ran from Tuesday, May 31st to Friday, July 29^th.

Five undergraduate women served as full-time fellows at departments and agencies of the Massachusetts State Treasurer’s Office, including the Debt Management Department, the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, the Massachusetts School Building Authority, and the Pension Reserve Investment Management Board.

“The Women in Finance Fellowship is an opportunity to encourage and support future women leaders in the financial services industry,” said State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg. “I am proud of the work accomplished by this year’s fellows, and hope that their time at Treasury will lead to success in their careers.”

“Working in the public sector has exposed me to an incredible group of individuals whose values and dedication to improving the education of students in Massachusetts has truly inspired me,” said Clara Chambers, a rising junior and economics major at Wellesley College who worked with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). “The supportive environment and Treasury’s commitment to education allows you to develop hard and soft skills, putting you in an excellent position to pursue whatever path in finance you choose.”

“This fellowship allowed me to gain a better understanding of financial concepts and procedures, while also letting me develop my analytical skills,” said Banmai Huynh, a rising junior and corporate finance and accounting major at Bentley University who worked with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). “I know that when I enter my next career in finance, these technical and soft skills that I have developed at the MSBA will follow me and make me a better coworker and colleague.”

When Treasurer Goldberg took office, she prioritized creating this fellowship experience for undergraduate female-identifying students pursuing majors in the financial services industry. Her goal for the program was to mentor talented women, helping them to build a network and pipeline in the financial services fields, while advocating for greater inclusion and advancement in leadership roles. 

Since its debut in 2016, the Women in Finance Fellowship has served and provided 34 fellows with full-time positions within offices of the Massachusetts State Treasury. Aside from leading projects and assisting their offices, fellows engage in salary negotiation workshops, alumni panels, and other events that strengthen professional skills and broaden networks to prepare for a career in the financial services industry.
