A tornado recently touched down on Cape Cod causing damage and leaving thousands without power. Tornadoes occur spontaneously and are known to rip up trees, flip cars, and destroy homes. It is often difficult to prepare for a tornado due to their unpredictable nature leaving you little time to prevent damage. Fortunately, damage from a tornado is covered under traditional home insurance policies.
If you have suffered property damage or loss due to a tornado:
- Report claims to your insurance company as soon as you can. Also notify independent insurance agents.
- Protect any damaged property to the extent you can to prevent further damage.
- Note and photograph all damage and losses. Back-up your claim with written estimates and receipts. This assists you when settling claims.
- If temporary housing is necessary, check your policy for Loss of Use coverage. Your policy may cover such expenses up to a stated amount.
