- Massachusetts Department of Revenue
Sometimes we’re just not ready for Tax Day. If you weren’t ready to file by the April 19 deadline, you qualified for an automatic extension if you paid at least 80% of your tax by April 19.
Reminder: It’s an extension of time to file, not to pay. Interest will be charged on any amount due with a return, even if you have a valid extension. With an extension, returns must be filed on or before October 17, 2022.
How to file your personal income tax return
When you’re ready to file, we encourage all taxpayers to e-file for a fast and easy process.
When you e-file your return rather than filing it on paper:
- Your returns are processed faster and
- Your refunds are received faster.
And e-filed returns generally have fewer errors.
On the DOR website, there are several filing options to choose from. Many are free for taxpayers who qualify. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites offer free tax preparation for taxpayers who qualify. To get help, you can:
- Find a local VITA site near you or
- Visit www.getyourrefund.org for virtual or self-guided preparation.
After you’ve filed
Once you have filed your return, you can use our online Check the Status of your Refund tool to get up-to-date information about your refund.
All you’ll need to provide is:
- Refund year
- SSN and
- Refund amount.
If you e-filed your return and chose direct deposit, it may take up to 4-6 weeks for your refund. If you filed on paper, it can take 8-10 weeks to receive a direct deposit refund. Add another week if paper check is requested.
