More about:

Access to Adoption Records

Learn more about paperwork and records for adoption.

All adoption paperwork held by the court is not available to the public, unless a judge orders otherwise. An adopted person may not see his adoption court files about his biological parents without proving to the court that there is a good reason to do so. Placement agencies can only release certain information to an adopted person, adoptive parent, or biological parent.

Please note that the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics has a procedure for people who have been adopted to see their birth records, per Massachusetts General Law (Chapter 210, section 5D).

Visit the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics to apply for a pre-adoption birth record.
