Male jurisdiction population

Updated monthly (6/1/2020)

  • 7,287 total males in the jurisdiction population: 6,817 criminally sentenced, 31 pre-trial detainees, and 439 civil commitments 
  • Average age of inmate was 43 years old (youngest inmate was 18 years old and oldest inmate was 91 years old)
  • 97% were serving a sentence of more than three years 
  • 75% had a violent governing offense 
  • 487 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence

  • 42% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 9th grade reading level 
  • 44% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 6th grade math level 
  • The 2014 three year recidivism rate was 32% for the total male population
