Male jurisdiction population

Updated monthly (11/1/2020)

  • 6,854 total males in the jurisdiction population: 6,277 criminally sentenced, 43 pre-trial detainees, and 534 civil commitments 
  • Average age of inmate was 43 years old (youngest inmate was 18 years old and oldest inmate was 87 years old)
  • 97% were serving a sentence of more than three years 
  • 77% had a violent governing offense 
  • 405 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence 

 

  • The 2015 three-year recidivism rate was 33% for the total male population 

Updated annually (1/1/2019)

  • 42% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 9th grade reading level 
  • 44% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 6th grade math level

  • 12 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence
