Male jurisdiction population

Updated monthly (4/1/2019)

  • 8,262 total males in the jurisdiction population: 7,709 criminally sentenced, 72 pre-trial detainees, and 481 civil commitments 
  • Average age of inmate was 42 years old (youngest inmate was 18 years old and oldest inmate was 95 years old)
  • 95% were serving a sentence of more than three years 
  • 72% had a violent governing offense 
  • 636 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence 

Updated annually (1/1/2019)

  • 42% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 9th grade reading level 
  • 44% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 6th grade math level 
  • The 2014 three year recidivism rate was 32% for the total male population

  • 61% were serving a sentence of more than three years 
  • 55% had a violent governing offense 
  • 15 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence
