Male jurisdiction population

Updated monthly (11/1/2017)

  • 8,800 total males in the jurisdiction population: 8,123 criminally sentenced, 83 pre-trial detainees, and 594 civil commitments 
  • Average age of inmate was 42 years old (youngest inmate was 18 years old and oldest inmate was 94 years old)
  • 95% were serving a sentence of more than three years 
  • 70% had a violent governing offense 
  • 800 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence 

Updated annually (1/1/2017)

  • 45% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 9th grade reading level 
  • 44% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 6th grade math level 
  • The 2013 three year recidivism rate was 32% for the total male population 
  • 29% were open mental health cases, 7% had a serious mental illness (SMI), and 21% were on psychotropic medication for the Custody Population as of 12/31/2016 Note: Information provided by Health Services Division

  • 614 total females in the jurisdiction population: 405 criminally sentenced, 207 pre-trial detainees, and 2 civil commitment
  • Average age of inmate was 37 years old (youngest inmate was 19 years old and oldest inmate was 72 years old) 
  • 60% were serving a sentence of more than three years 
  • 55% had a violent governing offense 
  • 16 were serving a governing mandatory drug sentence

  • 31% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 9th grade reading level 
  • 31% entered the Massachusetts DOC with less than a 6th grade math level
