The DRIVE Initiative

Learn about the Massachusetts Discovery, Research and Innovation for a Vibrant Economy (DRIVE) Initiative

Massachusetts’ innovation economy accounts for nearly 40% of jobs in the state, employing tens of thousands of people in education, health care, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing – and sustaining jobs in construction, food services, retail, transportation, and more. To protect jobs, fuel discovery, and keep Massachusetts the #1 state for innovation, Governor Healey created the DRIVE Initiative; proposing $400 million in state funding to leverage private and institutional resources and retain world-class talent and strengthen our economy. Governor Healey also signed EO #644 to establish the Advisory Commission on Advancing Research and Discovery in Massachusetts.

Historically, annual federal research and development funding to Massachusetts has averaged $8.6 billion, and has supported 81,300 jobs, $7.8 billion in income, and more than $16 billion in total economic activity. Every dollar invested in research yields more than two dollars in economic benefit.

By strengthening our research ecosystem at the state level through the DRIVE Initiative, we can:

  • Preserve and expand high-quality jobs;
  • Retain top talent and attract new innovation leaders;
  • Build regional economic strength across the state; and
  • Keep Massachusetts at the forefront of global discovery.
