BH-JI has played a huge part in my life

0:16

From just the bare essentials of what I

0:18

needed the day I got out to ongoing

0:21

support they've been there for

0:22

me 100% They actually really care about

0:26

what happened to me when I get out

0:28

They helped me restart my life The

0:31

people there they're just like they're

0:34

like family They really are because it's

0:36

like they listen to you you know and

0:38

they ask you questions and you can be

0:40

honest with them because they got

0:41

nothing but your best interest at hand

BH-JI is a statewide in reach re-entry

0:50

model that helps justice involved

0:52

individuals connect with behavioral

0:54

health services and social supports in

0:56

their community with partnership between

0:58

EOHHS and the trial court BH-JI services

1:02

are provided by nine vendors throughout

1:04

Massachusetts BH-JI helps people who are

1:07

justice involved which means leaving

1:09

jail or prisons within 6 months people

1:12

who have recently left jail or prisons

1:14

within a year people on parole and

1:17

people on

1:22

probation In developing BHJI a wide

1:25

range of stakeholders examined

1:27

successful re-entry programs and noticed

1:30

that many effective initiatives were

1:32

short-term We sought to create a

1:34

permanent solution and launched BHJI in

1:37

2019 Since then we've expanded statewide

1:41

and utilized the Mass Health Insurance

1:43

Benefit to ensure the long-term

1:45

availability of these services The

1:48

component of BHJI covered by Mass Health

1:50

is referred to as

1:53

CSP-JI community support program for

1:55

individuals with justice

3:03

3:05

understand your unique needs

3:11

Releasing back into society can be

3:12

overwhelming for returning citizens a

3:15

feeling of disbelief at being free and

3:17

that's totally normal We understand

3:19

you're coming from a world where you

3:20

were told what to do and where to go

3:23

With your integrity and dignity in mind

3:25

we help you reclaim independence by

3:27

providing phones and transit passes upon

3:29

release and guide you through the

3:30

changes that have happened in society

3:33

Coming home to family and friends can be

3:35

a huge adjustment because you and your

3:37

loved ones have changed over the years

3:40

Upon coming home families don't always

3:42

know how to act around each other and it

3:44

can feel like getting to know you all

3:45

over again A navigator can help rebuild

3:48

those connections creating a strong

3:50

support system for a better reconnection

3:52

We get it Returning to society is tough

3:55

BHJI navigators are familiar with the

3:58

challenges coming home And we are here

3:59

to help you experience freedom being

4:01

home with your friends and

4:02

[Music]

4:06

family Our ability to help our members

4:08

starts with building a good rapport a

4:10

connection that's built on trust respect

4:12

good communication and action Ideally we

4:15

can set up a meeting while you're still

4:16

incarcerated That way we get a head

4:18

start getting to know you and better

4:19

anticipating what your needs might look

4:20

like upon release Sometimes we meet once

4:23

before your release and sometimes we

4:25

connect over several visits over several

4:27

months We don't always get to meet while

4:29

you're behind the walls but no matter

4:30

when the initial meeting takes place our

4:32

approach is still the same We're here

4:34

for emotional support too We love

4:35

hearing when you get that job or hit a

4:37

milestone in your recovery but we're

4:39

also here for the ups and downs as you

4:40

navigate re-entry It's a privilege to

4:42

get to know you and be part of your

4:44

journey And the BHA program is here to

4:46

help guide you in whatever your next

4:47

chapter looks

4:49

[Music]

4:51

like Here at BHJI we help you with all

4:54

sorts of social support We want you to

4:56

have a successful re-entry so we guide

4:58

you in finding gainful employment

5:00

meeting your education needs and finding

5:02

stable and safe housing We also ensure

5:04

that your mental health and substance

5:06

use needs are met and also connect you

5:09

with medical providers for your basic

5:11

health needs We offer financial

5:13

assistance and access to basic

5:15

necessities like food hygiene and

5:18

clothing Finally we recognize the

5:21

importance of social connections and

5:23

finding time to relax So we help you

5:25

connect with family friends and

5:27

providers and also reestablish your

5:30

hobbies Ultimately we want to see you

5:32

build a stable self-reliant and

5:34

meaningful

5:35

[Music]

5:38

life One of the most rewarding

5:40

challenges that we tackle with our

5:41

members is housing Stable housing acts

5:43

as a platform for well-being allowing

5:45

formerly incarcerated individuals to

5:47

focus on the important areas of their

5:49

life like employment health and

5:51

relationships without the constant worry

5:52

of where they're going to lay their head

5:53

at night There are many barriers to

5:55

obtaining this affordable safe housing

5:57

and that can happen to anyone So our

5:59

navigators are here and we're equipped

6:01

to help you do just that Keep that roof

6:03

over your head We'll assist you with

6:05

obtaining income locating the housing

6:07

and connecting you to the community

6:09

resources to help further promote your

6:11

housing stability We all know it's not

6:13

easy to find housing with a criminal

6:15

record but stable housing is the

6:16

foundation for your success and

6:18

well-being and building a positive

6:20

future and we are here to help you with

6:22

all of those challenges every step of

6:24

the way

6:25

[Music]

6:28

BHCI can offer guidance and resources to

6:32

help you reach your education and

6:35

employment goals We connect you with

6:36

local colleges and programs if you need

6:39

your GED or highet and help you obtain a

6:43

copy online once it's complete We can

6:45

help you navigate the college

6:47

application process and financial aid

6:49

applications like FASA to help pay for

6:52

school We also offer assistance with

6:55

obtaining a permit or driver's license

6:57

and connect members with local agencies

7:00

to help pay for driving courses and road

7:02

test fees Many of our members choose to

7:05

pursue employment or education upon

7:08

release But it's important to remember

7:10

that we respond to the goals you have

7:13

for yourself and at your own pace

7:16

Whether you want to pursue part-time or

7:19

full-time work obtain a GED or even take

7:22

college courses BHCI can support you in

7:26

achieving whatever path you

7:29

[Music]

7:32

choose Connections to healthcare

7:34

appointments in the community are an

7:36

integral part of the BHJI work between

7:39

navigators and members Many of our

7:41

members have not received health care

7:43

substance use or mental health treatment

7:46

outside of a correctional facility or

7:48

they may have been disconnected from

7:50

providers as a result of incarceration

7:54

As a navigator our role is to really

7:56

collaborate with the member and find

7:58

available outpatient providers

8:00

outpatient mental health providers and

8:03

to assist in scheduling and setting up

8:06

PT1 which is a Mass Health

8:08

transportation service for medical

8:11

appointments If our members don't have

8:13

active insurance we can assist in

8:15

applying for Mass Health Accessing

8:18

health care and mental health treatment

8:19

in the community is a critical part of

8:22

fostering well-being upon re-entry and

8:24

we take a lot of pride in connecting our

8:26

members to the treatment that best

8:28

matches their current

8:30

[Music]

8:33

needs BHJI vendors have long-standing

8:37

relationships with local providers which

8:39

streamlines the process for members That

8:42

means that the services and resources

8:44

that you need to rebuild your life are

8:47

easily accessible through public

8:49

transportation and the local providers

8:52

are familiar with the challenges that

8:54

you will face upon re-entry We

8:57

understand re-entry can be very

8:59

overwhelming for members who haven't

9:01

used a computer or access the internet

9:03

in years Technology moves fast and

9:06

almost everything operates in the

9:08

digital world nowadays like making

9:10

appointments checking bank statements

9:13

submitting job applications So when we

9:16

need to teach you basic computer skills

9:18

you have the internet literacy to help

9:20

you navigate all those online systems

9:23

The BHGI program is all about empowering

9:26

you with the tools to prove to yourself

9:29

that with trust good communication and

9:32

consistent action you can not only

9:35

survive but thrive after release

9:41

One of the great things about the BHJ

9:43

program when I think about it is that

9:45

each vendor has developed a holistic and

9:47

comprehensive network of partners

9:50

designed to support your success within

9:52

your local community A strength of the

9:54

program is that we meet you where you're

9:57

at matching resources that fit your

9:59

unique needs Some of these resources

10:01

might include medication assistant

10:03

treatment individual family and group

10:06

therapy primary care providers sober

10:09

living environments recovery coaching

10:11

residential treatment programs clinical

10:13

stabilization programs or even detox

10:16

sometimes legal aid services employment

10:19

assistant programs as well as

10:20

educational resources

10:23

Not only do we connect you to community

10:25

resources but we can also help you

10:26

navigate any parole or probation

10:28

requirements you may have out in the

10:30

community I know that re-entry can feel

10:32

really overwhelming and BHJ navigators

10:35

are here to help you every step of the

10:36

way Your journey is really important to

10:38

us and we want to promote your long-term

10:40

recovery reduce recidivism as well as

10:43

set you up for success

10:48

A lot of barriers that our members face

10:50

are financial in nature

10:52

A lot of people are released with just

10:54

the clothes on their back And most

10:56

members lack any support at all

10:59

financially or otherwise Unexpected

11:02

costs can feel overwhelming like when

11:05

you need a prescription or even close

11:07

for a job interview That's where BHJI

11:10

steps in We're like the safety net to

11:13

address the initial hurdles of re-entry

11:16

so that you can focus on your progress

11:19

We frequently provide essential items

11:21

like phones to stay connected basic

11:24

necessities like clothing toiletries and

11:27

food a driver's license or even just a

11:29

government ID which is something you're

11:32

going to need moving forward in your

11:34

early recovery BHJI is about more than

11:38

just financial aid It's about hope

11:40

support and the belief in your potential

11:43

We empower you with the resources you

11:45

need and we walk alongside you every

11:48

step of the way So you can overcome

11:50

re-entry obstacles and build a healthy

11:53

stable and meaningful future
