15 years ago, I had a Brian stem stroke
0:12
while gardening. I was not given a
0:15
choice of my long-term care. I lived in
0:18
nursing home for 15 years. I was very
0:20
fortunate to have the caring doctors and
0:22
therapists, but I noticed many disabled
0:25
people were overlooked, and this
0:26
bothered me. I felt so disconnected from
0:29
society. Moving back into the community
0:32
gave me a feeling of being a part of
0:33
society.
0:35
I quickly got to knowing and loving
0:37
Tonan and wanted to make Ton my home.
0:41
The only challenge, if you can call it a
0:44
challenge, was getting used to a new and
0:46
less restricted and isolating
0:48
environment.
0:50
Welcome home.
0:54
I have something for you.
0:56
These are the keys to your house.
0:59
And here you go, kiddo. Welcome home.
1:02
I'm going to set them right there. How's
1:04
that? Will that work? You happy?
1:13
I looked forward to moving back to the
1:15
community.
1:19
I have my life back. I see my family
1:22
more frequently and I can be involved in
1:24
the community without the restricted
1:25
nursing home regulations.
1:28
The privacy back is wonderful.

I couldn't asked for more.
2:19
I just love it. I feel like I am part of
2:21
the community again.
2:24
Living with housemates has given me the
2:26
opportunity to have wonderful
2:28
friendships.

I have very good friends here that are
2:35
very caring and looks after me.
2:40
This is Jan. I am fortunate to have Jan
2:43
as to a friend and housemate. Jan is a
2:46
pleasure. Oh. Oh yes.
2:53
I feel very happy and satisfied to hear
2:56
of how this has helped other people and
2:58
I hope to have all states to follow
3:00
suit. Everyone has done a wonderful job.
3:04
Thank you for raising public awareness
3:06
and is informing families and disabled
3:08
people that they have a choice. This is
3:11
as close to being home as it gets.
