I am John Oliveria, Acting Commissioner at Massachusetts Commission for the Blind or MCB. This week is DeafBlind Awareness Week, a time to recognize the capabilities and achievements of people who are DeafBlind. This week is marked annually during the last week of June in honor of Helen Keller, whose birthday is on June 27. Helen Keller, of course, was one of MCB’s first commissioners. She was a guiding example of courage, hope, determination, and achievement. At MCB, our DeafBlind Extended Supports team works to support residents of the Commonwealth who have combined loss of vision and hearing to maximize their opportunities for a productive life in the community of their choice through education, employment, residential services, and recreational day programs. I am honored to celebrate this week of DeafBlind Awareness in Massachusetts.
