When you're coming home and you have a child with complex care needs, you know, you're focusing on that and the medical piece of it, and then DPH comes in to your life, which is like a blessing 'cause then you start learning the different programs that can actually help your family and they also can help guide you. Like even when they're beginning with school, they were there for us. They were able to help us with a sensory playroom area. It's like a whole 'nother way of maneuvering life.

(Yelitza speaking in foreign language) They are like a family to me. I see them as a family because the support is unconditional. From the first moment that they arrived to our family. I would recommend it and I know that there are many families that would need, yes, would need to open themselves more and understand the goodness of this program and how beneficial it is for not only the children but for the whole family.

Elizabeth Bostic
Having a child that is complex can be very isolating. One of the many benefits of care coordination is that you won't feel that way anymore. You get the opportunity to talk with someone about all of the things that you're facing, solve some problems, and also potentially even meet other families that are dealing with the same types of issues.

As a new immigrant family facing complex medical needs the care coordination program served as a vital link between the school and the healthcare providers during my daughters hospitalization, which lasted for three consecutive months following complicated spinal surgery. Throughout this challenging period, there were numerous issues we encountered and struggled to manage on our own. However our coordinator facilitated connections with schools and healthcare providers, shared valuable caregiving tips, and ensured we had all the necessary documents to facilitate my daughters smooth return to school.

Care coordination has been helpful for my boys a lot. I thought I was alone, but when care coordination came, especially, I don't know much about the school system, so it has opened the door through the school system for my boys.

What makes the services I get from care coordination beneficial to my family? I essentially have an advocate, a voice for me, so someone I can go to, whereas before, I had no idea what existed, what sort of benefits my child could receive. Now, I have someone I can pick up the phone and any question that I might have, even if it's just to vent, even if it's just to say I'm confused, I have no idea what I'm doing, just a sounding board, someone who's there.
