transcript  Targeting northern pike through the ice

I’m Cameron Young with MassWildlife, and today we’re using our Go Fish MA app to figure out where to fish at another lake in Pittsfield.

Now, this is a large lake, and we’re targeting northern pike. So I want to fish in shallow, weedy water out to a drop-off in roughly 25 feet of water.

On a large lake like this, it’s hard to tell where those drop-offs are going to be, and that’s where the Go Fish MA app is so useful.

I’m trying to target roughly 12 feet of water, going from weeds into a deep drop-off. When I drilled this hole and sounded it, it confirmed the depth, and that’s how deep we are.

Today we’re fishing for northern pike, and northern pike are big fish, so they require big bait. I’m using a large frozen fallfish, a 40-pound fluorocarbon leader, and a 5/0 circle hook.
