Petitioner: William Griffin

The petitioner is back before the board after previously being before the board on June 23, 2026, in which the board voted to place the item on a 60-day hold, which provided a deadline of August 22, 2026, for applicant to gather additional information on required variances and to show proof of mitigation for the shallow pit.

The petitioner has submitted a modified variance request seeking a variance from 524 CMR (ASME A 17.1-2013), Section 35, 5.2 Limited Use/Limited Application Elevators, 5.2.1.16.5, Maximum Rise, to allow the installation of a Garaventa Elvoron Slide LULA elevator with a maximum rise of 312.5 inches and a variance from ASME A 17.1-2013 Section 2 .4 .1, governing bottom car clearance, and requests approval to utilize the manufacturer-designed, permanently attached pit prop assembly supplied by Garaventa Lift as an equivalent means of protection for personnel working within the elevator pit.

The petitioner is seeking a variance from ASME A17.1-2013 section 2.5.4 (b) to allow the notch in the car sill to exceed the max of 1.25" dimension to keep the current dimension of 2.5”.

  2. Discussion: When, as part of a modernization, can the Department require addition of a sump pump, where not part of original installation? Applicable code sections for review include, but may not be limited to, 524 CMR 10.04 and ASME A17.1-2013 (8.7.2.2, 8.7.2.27.6, 8.7.3.31.7) as modified by Massachusetts 524 CMR 35.00.

      The petitioner was back before the board after being before the board on June 23, 2026, and April 7, 2026, and the board voted to place the item on a 60-day hold, which provided a deadline of August 22, 2026, for the applicant to gather evidence proving the battery lower is not required by the local building department and the Springfield Fire Department. 

      The petitioner is seeking relief from 524 CMR 8.06 by requesting permission to remove the battery lowering unit from this elevator.

The petitioner was before the board on July 7, 2026, and the board voted to place the item on a 120-day hold, which provided a deadline of November 4, 2026, for the applicant to investigate additional options for code compliance or provide documentation showing the scope of hardship. 

The petitioner is seeking a variance from ASME A17.1-2013 Section 6.1.3.6.4 - Safety Zone in which they are proposing a solution for the deficiency.
