Overview   of Boxborough - Massachusetts Avenue/Route 111 Bridge Replacement project over I-495

A Live Virtual Design Public Hearing will be hosted on the MassDOT website below to present the design for the proposed Massachusetts Avenue/Route 111 Bridge Replacement project over I-495 in Boxborough, MA.

Purpose:

The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Bridge Replacement, B-18-002, Route 111 (Massachusetts Avenue) over I-495. All views and comments submitted in response to the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The Proposed Project consists of replacing the deteriorated, existing 5-span Steel bridge structure over I-495 in Boxborough. The proposed replacement bridge is a 2-span structure that will increase vertical clearance over I-495, accommodate future widening of I-495 within the bridge opening, and introduce future accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout this segment of Route 111. At the eastern and western project limits, the intersections of the I-495 On-Off ramps with Route 111 will be maintained in their current configuration. The proposed bridge cross section will consist of two 11-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders in each direction, along with a 10-foot shared use path along the north side of the structure and a 6-foot sidewalk along the south side of the structure. The shared use path and sidewalk will provide bicycle and pedestrian accommodations along this segment of Route 111 and will connect with future roadway improvements at the eastern and western approaches to the bridge to improve mobility for all users throughout the area. The proposed bridge will be constructed using accelerated construction methods to reduce traffic disruption.

A secure right-of-way is not necessary for this project at present, however, acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT’s policy concerning land acquisitions will be presented in the hearing.

Project inquiries, written statements and other exhibits regarding the proposed undertaking may be submitted to Carrie E. Lavallee, P.E., Chief Engineer/Deputy Administrator, via e-mail to MassDOTMajorProjects@dot.state.ma.us or via US Mail to Suite 7410, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, Attention: Major Projects, Project File No. 608009.
