How to Become a Brockton Firefighter

• Candidates must be at least 19 years of age by test date. High School Diploma or Equivalent. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required before being hired
• Successful completion of two-part HRD test given annually. (Human Resources Division)
• Complete and submit an application for employment.
• Candidate will be subject to a background check and CORI check.
• Oral interview.
• Pass a Physical Examination
• Successfully complete Recruit Training Academy and Firefighter I/II Massachusetts Department of Fire Service certification

The Department

In 1846, the Brockton Fire Department was established. In 1915 we became full time professional department. Currently operating out of 6 different stations to include 5 engine companies, 3 ladder truck companies and 1 heavy rescue.

Brockton maintains its own Dispatch and Signal Divisions, as well as a Fire Prevention Unit and Training Division.

Most recently rated as a Class 1 Fire Service by the Insurance Services Office.

The Firefighters

Firefighters are required to perform a variety of tasks in a wide variety of hazardous situations.

Firefighters are routinely exposed to physically taxing situations, that require them to be in good physical condition in order to perform their duties.

Although Fire Suppression continues to be the core mission to the Fire Service, all hazards have increasingly become the focus of our department. Routinely the department responds to medical emergencies, vehicle entrapments, technical rescues, and hazardous materials calls.

Crews respond to emergencies 24/7, 365 days a year. The Brockton Fire Department responds to approximately 32,000 calls per year.

The Department Life

The Brockton Fire department is a diverse group of men and women who serve in a variety of roles.

Station life consists of 24-hour shifts, Firefighters work weekends, nights, and holidays.

Firefighters are responsible for maintaining their living quarters, trucks, and also their equipment during the course of their 24-hour shift.

Firefighters are constantly training, learning, and practicing. Firefighters keep up with Medical, Fire, Special Operations, and many other trainings.
