Overview   of Somerville - Notice of a public informational website

An Informational Website will be published on MassDOT’s site to present the design, its benefits and potentials impacts for the proposed Pavement Resurfacing, Safety and Healthy Transportation Improvements on Route 28 (McGrath/O’Brien Highway) in Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Purpose:

The purpose of this informational website is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Pavement Resurfacing, Safety and Healthy Transportation Improvements project. All views and comments submitted in response to the informational website will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The proposed project will resurface and restripe Route 28 where it runs through Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts, while implementing safety and healthy transportation improvements. The Project Area runs along Route 28 from the approximately the intersection with Third Street (O’Brien Highway) in Cambridge to the intersection with Broadway in Somerville (McGrath Highway). Proposed improvements include corridor pavement resurfacing, implementation of a road diet (reducing vehicular travel lanes by one lane in each direction); the addition of separated, buffered bicycle lanes in both directions; transit improvements including bus stop markings; and sidewalk and crosswalk improvements as needed. The project aims to maintain state of good repair and increase pavement quality, calm traffic, increase safety for all roadway users, and fill a substantial gap in the multimodal network, in line with MassDOT Healthy Transportation Policy Directive and statewide modal plans.

Mailed statements and exhibits intended for inclusion in the project record must be dated between February 22, 2021 and March 22, 2021. Project inquiries may also be submitted through the comment form on the project's website.
