Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.

Overview

A Live Virtual Design Public Hearing will be hosted on the MassDOT website below to present the design for the proposed Rebecca M. Johnson Elementary School Improvements (SRTS) project in Springfield, MA.

Purpose:

The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Rebecca M. Johnson Elementary School Improvements (SRTS) project. All views and comments submitted in response to the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The proposed project consists of the construction of targeted pedestrian improvements to provide improved access to the Rebecca M Johnson Elementary School with the primary area of focus being along Catharine Street beginning at the intersections of Yale and Dartmouth Streets and ending at the entrance to the school. A new traffic signal is proposed at the intersection of Bay Street and Catharine Street with mast arms to allow for overhead signals to provide greater visibility and fully actuated pedestrian crossings across each leg of the intersection. Improvements also include new sidewalks, traffic calming elements and curb ramps for pedestrian accommodation meeting ADA/AAB requirements. Additional sidewalk improvements are proposed at the Marion Street entrance to the school as well as new signage, pavement markings and high visibility crossings with flashing beacons at the Catharine Street entrance to the school.

A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The City of Springfield is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT’s policy concerning land acquisitions will be presented at the hearing.

Project inquiries, written statements and other exhibits regarding the proposed undertaking may be submitted to Carrie E. Lavallee, P.E., Chief Engineer, via e-mail to MassDOTProjectManagement@dot.state.ma.us or via US Mail to Suite 7550, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, Attention: Project Management, Project File No. 612080.
