What is happening?

MassDOT is beginning Phase 1 of the full restoration of the Sumner Tunnel between East Boston and the North End. The project will provide many public benefits including:

  • Improved tunnel safety
  • A smoother, more durable roadway surface
  • New lighting and security systems
  • Better cell phone, GPS, and radio service inside tunnel

How will this affect you?

Weekend closures and construction are set to begin June 10, 2022. All abutters and roadway users are invited to attend a virtual public information meeting to discuss the construction schedule, project impacts, and proposed detours that will begin in June 2022. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation. Spanish and Arabic interpretation will be available.

This meeting is accessible to people with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency.
