Overview of Wachusett Watershed Water Sleuths: May 7 - May 13, 2023
May 7-13
Salt Sleuth Citizen Science
During Drinking Water Week, May 7-13, become a Salt Sleuth to do freshwater forensics! Search for salt in local freshwater by collecting a water sample from a waterbody in West Boylston, Boylston, Sterling, Holden, Princeton, or Rutland. An increasing trend in chlorides from road salt in both groundwater and surface waters of the Wachusett Reservoir Watershed has been documented. You can help provide additional data on dissolved salts!
Saturday May 13
Meet a Scientist 2:00-5:00pm
Bring your water sample to The Wachusett Dam Day Event from 2-5 to be tested for conductivity and put your results on the map! DCR Environmental Quality Staff will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate how salt is measured. Water high in salt conducts electricity better than water of low salinity. Samples will be tested for conductivity, a measure of the ability of water to pass an electrical current.
