Overview

A Virtual Design Public Hearing will be hosted on the MassDOT website below to present the design for the proposed project in West Brookfield, MA.

Purpose:

The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Bridge Replacement, W-19-002 (187), Long Hill Road Over Quaboag River project. All views and comments submitted in response to the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

The proposed project consists of fully replacing existing Bridge No. W-19-002 carrying Long Hill Road over the Quaboag River. The existing span length of the bridge will be increased from approximately 95 feet to 140 feet. The new structure will consist of a steel multi-girder superstructure on pile supported concrete abutments. The existing roadway on the bridge will be widened by 1 foot on each side to provide an 11-foot-wide lane and 5-foot-wide shoulder in each direction. The existing 5-and-half-foot wide sidewalk on the south side of the bridge will be replaced with a 6-foot-wide sidewalk to meet current criteria. Sidewalk ramps are proposed at the bridge approaches to transition pedestrians to the shoulder. Long Hill Road will be repaved for approximately 300 feet on each side of the bridge. Roadway upgrades are proposed within the paving the limits including new guardrail, curbing, and drainage structures. The shoulder widening has been provided in accordance with applicable standards to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian use.

A secure right-of-way is necessary for this project. Acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Town of West Brookfield is responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassDOT’s policy concerning land acquisitions will be presented in the hearing.
