Public Meeting Notice  West Springfield – Elimination of two at-grade railroad crossings at Front Street and First Street

Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 6:00 PM

Address

West Springfield Town Hall, Justin Morgan Auditorium, 26 Central Street, West Springfield, MA 01089

Overview

A Public Informational Meeting will be held by MassDOT to discuss the proposed project in the Town of West Springfield.

Purpose:

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed project. All views and comments made at the meeting will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

Proposal:

This project proposes constructing a grade-separated crossing to address the longstanding traffic congestion and safety concerns associated with the existing at-grade railroad crossing at Front Street and CSX Rail. By carrying vehicular traffic safely above the tracks, direct interaction between roadway users and railroad operations are eliminated. The project will facilitate the movement of freight, vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes throughout the study area, reduce traffic congestion related to the grade crossing blockages, and cease the rerouting and detouring of vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes.

The existing conditions create regular blockage of two highway-rail at-grade crossings for extended periods of time by rail cars (stops traffic a minimum of 45 minutes - 1 hour, daily). massDOT has prepared three proposed concepts which, if constructed, will provide grade-separated 11-foot wide vehicle lanes, 6-foot wide sidewalks, and 5-foot wide bike lanes to eliminate this condition. MassDOT will be presenting these concepts for public comment.
