Lifeguard candidates for swimming pools should be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths) in under 11 minutes.
Lifeguard candidates for Designated Swimming Areas (beaches) should be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths) in under 9 minutes, 30 seconds.
Lifeguard candidates for ocean beaches will be required to complete a Run-Swim-Run.
Lifeguard candidates under the age of 18 will need to present a valid work permit issued by their local school department.
State law requires lifeguards working at DCR facilities to undergo annual CPR/AED training. Lifeguard candidates who were certified in CPR/AED prior to 9/4/22 will need to take a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review course.
