- Lifeguard candidates for swimming pools should be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths) in under 11 minutes.
- Lifeguard candidates for Designated Swimming Areas (beaches) should be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths) in under 9 minutes, 30 seconds.
- Lifeguard candidates for ocean beaches will be required to complete a Run-Swim-Run.
- Lifeguard candidates under the age of 18 will need to present a valid work permit issued by their local school department.
- State law requires lifeguards working at DCR facilities to undergo annual CPR/AED training. Lifeguard candidates who were certified in CPR/AED prior to 9/4/22 will need to take a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review course.
