Guide  Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification Levels and Authorizations

This Guide describes the 4 levels and qualifications of the Defensive Tactics (DT) Instructor. Each level outlines qualifications and training potential instructor candidates must meet. Certified Defensive Tactics Instructors must attend re-certification training every year.

Basic Defensive Tactics Instructor

Basic Defensive Tactics Instructors provide training within their respective departments or to other departments but do not instruct for the MPTC.  

  • Certified, upon completion of the 15-day Defensive Tactics Basic Instructor School, to instruct within their own departments all areas of Defensive Tactics Program
  • Qualifications: At least 5 years full-time law enforcement experience
  • Must renew certification yearly

Level II: Assistant Defensive Tactics Instructor

Level II DT Instructors are certified to assist the Lead Instructor in teaching all areas of the Defensive Tactics program for MPTC. Level II instructors assist in recruit training and in-service and reserve classes.

  •     Must be a current full-time law enforcement officer.
  •     Must have at least 1 year in grade as a Level I Instructor.
  •     MPTC APP Coordinator
  •     At least 12 hours of working with a Lead Instructor.
  •     Written evaluation/approval from Lead Instructor.

Level III: Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor

Level III DT Lead Instructors are certified to be the primary instructor at the recruit level, in-service, reserve/intermittent and may lead specialty classes.

  •     Must have maintained a current DT Certification.
  •     Must be current full-time law enforcement officer.
  •     Must have at least 3 years time in grade as an advanced instructor.
  •     MPTC Firearms Instructor
  •     Taser Instructor
  •     Must have assisted in at least 2 recruit classes, 1 reserve academy and 1 year of in-service training.
  •     Must pass written and proficiency test as well as a DT Instructor Trainer teaching evaluation.

Level IV: Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor

Certified to teach the 15-day DTBIS, and 3-day instructor re-certification; can re-certify lower level instructors in all areas of the DT program; can teach MPTC Taser enhancement and Use of Force.

  •     Must have maintained all certifications through re-certification.
  •     Must be current full-time law enforcement officer.
  •     Active lead instructor for at least two years.
  •     Letter of recommendation from the State DT Coordinator.
  •     Must complete and pass all written and proficiency testing associated with the position of Instructor Trainer.
  •     Testing will be completed in front of a board of current MPTC Level IV Instructors.

Defensive Tactics Certification Training

To become certified as an MPTC instructional trainer in Defensive Tactics, potential candidates must attend all 12 Days of Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification.

The Pre-requisite Instructor Development Program is required by all instructors who have not previously attended this Pre-requisite.

All Defensive Tactics Instructor Certifications expire one year from the initial certification was issued. Instructors are required to attend mandatory Re-certification training within one year.
