What you need   for Apply for Special Operator License (Special to Have Charge or Operate)

These licenses are generally in the dry cleaning and small manufacturing industries. Anyone designated by the owner or user of a steam plant to either operate that plant, or to have charge of that plant, must hold the appropriate Special Engineer license for that plant.

Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Written request signed by the owner or user of the plant.
  • Pass an oral examination.

  1. Apply for a Special to Operate Engineer License (Steam Plant)

    Completed applications must include:

    • Application Fee
    • One (1) passport style color photograph measuring 2” by 2”;
    • MA residents do not have to send photographs if they permit DFS use of their RMV photograph on the application.
    • Proof of age (legible copy of current driver's license is acceptable)
    • Written request signed by the owner or user of the plant.
  2. Examination

    A state district engineering inspector will contact you to arrange a date and time for an oral examination. This will take place at your work site.

  3. Renewal of Special Engineering Licenses

    These licenses are valid for five years.

    Six hours of documented continuing education is required for renewal.

    60 days before the expiration of your license you will receive the application to renew by mail. Please submit the completed application and fee 30 days before your license expires.
