The Details

What you need

Any hairdresser, aesthetician, operator, or instructor licensed in Massachusetts can also be registered and practice as a demonstrator after paying the required fee. If you hold a license in another state, please attach a copy to your application.

To be eligible to apply for a demonstrator license, you must have at least 3 months of practical experience in this role.

What to include with your completed application:

  • If you do not hold any cosmetology, aesthetics, barber, or instructor license, a notarized affidavit certifying work experience for each manufacturer or distributor must be submitted. This affidavit must be on the letterhead of the company or product for which you are demonstrating.
  • A copy of your driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID
  • A notarized Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) form
  • A 2-inch by 2-inch photo of yourself

Note: Please retain copies of all paperwork submitted. It usually takes 3-4 weeks to process an application. Incomplete applications may delay processing time.

License restrictions:

  • You may only perform demonstrations for individuals in the cosmetology industry and not the general public
  • Demonstrations can take place in the following locations: in a licensed cosmetology shop, at hairdressers’ trade shows or meetings in the presence of licensed cosmetology shop owners and their employees, in the business quarters of distributors or supply houses, or in cosmetology schools with licensed instructors in attendance. You cannot charge a fee for demonstrations.
