The Details
What you need
A Pipefitter Apprentice must be licensed with the OPSI, must hold a valid registration with the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, and must be employed by a Massachusetts Master Pipefitter for the duration of their apprenticeship. A Journeyman Pipefitter can supervise the work of the Pipefitter Apprentice, but the work hours will only be accepted while registered with the DAS, licensed with the OPSI, and under the employment of the Master Pipefitter. To complete an application, enter all required information and attach the following documents:
- A copy of your high school diploma or equivalent certification
- A 2" x 2" passport-style photo
- A copy of your Division of Apprentice Standards ID Card
Incomplete applications will not be scheduled for examination until all missing documentation is submitted.
Fees
Active military members, their spouses & military veterans may qualify for fee-reduction benefits under the Valor Act. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. All money orders must be signed and dated.

An Apprentice Pipefitter License is required for the installation, repair, replacement, maintenance or alteration of any apparatus for piping appliances, as defined in devices or accessories for heating systems having a rating greater than 700,000 BTU, including both Power/Heating/Cooling Pipefitting and Process Piping.

Licensed apprentices will be limited to two (2) renewals of their license unless otherwise approved by the Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians and Sprinkler Fitters.
