Companies servicing fire suppression systems in Massachusetts must have a certificate of registration.
Individuals servicing fire suppression systems in Massachusetts must be licensed to work on the specific type of system.
People can be licensed to work on four types of systems:
- Self-service motor fuel facilities (requires a license to work on pre-engineered fixed systems);
- Portable fire extinguishers;
- Engineered fixed systems;
- Pre-engineered fixed systems.

Apply for licenses to service fire suppression systems
Completed applications must include:
- 1 color passport type photograph (2" X 2")
- MA residents do not have to send photographs if they permit DFS use of their driver's license photograph from the Registry of Motor Vehicles on the application
Applications for licenses to work on engineered and pre-engineered fixed systems must also include a resume listing your technical qualifications and experience in charging, recharging, repairing and testing pre-engineered or engineered systems.

In order to be licensed to work on any of the four types of fire suppression systems you must pass the exam for each one.
After we receive your completed application, you will be registered for the next exam date. If the application is received after the deadline for the next exam, you will be registered for the following exam.
Incomplete applications will be returned to you.
Renew fire suppression system licenses
90 days before your fire suppression system license expires, DFS will email (if we have a valid email on file) or mail you a renewal application.
Return the completed application and fee at least 30 days before your license expires.
Apply for certificates of registration (for companies)
Companies servicing fire suppression systems in Massachusetts must have a certificate of registration.
Submit the completed application and fee ($60 per restriction) along with:
- One copy of each of your service tag (s)
- List of licensed employees
Companies must have employees licensed to work on the specific type of extinguishing system they want to service.
Site inspections
Code compliance officers from the Department of Fire Services will conduct a site inspection of your facility prior to issuing the certificate of registration.
This is to ensure your facility meets the requirements of the fire code.

- You must be pre-registered for all license exams.
- Your complete current application must be received by 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date. If we get your application after the deadline, you cannot take the next exam, but will be registered for the following one.
- All exams start promptly at 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise noted.
- All exams are offered at both 1 State Road in Stow (park in the remote lot at the top of the hill) and at 100 Grochmal Avenue in Springfield.
