Apply for the Training Opportunities Program (TOP). If you're eligible, we can waive your active work search while you receive training.
You must submit your TOP application within the first 20 weeks that you receive unemployment benefits. Try to submit at least 3 weeks before your training program begins.

What you need

You have to apply for TOP within the first 20 weeks that you are paid unemployment benefits.

Before you apply, find an approved training program that meets your needs by:

For your TOP application, you will need the following information:

  • The type of training program you have selected
  • The name of the school(s) offering the training
  • The start and end dates of the training program
  • The cost of tuition and other related expenses

Fees

DUA does not fund your training costs. If you need financial assistance to pay for your training program, check with your local Career Center for information about grants, loans, or other funding sources.

How to apply

  1. There are 2 ways to get an application. You can log in to UI Online and download one or you can call (617) 626-5521 and ask us to send you one.
    1. For UI Online: Select Request TOP application on the left navigation pane. Then, print the application.
  2. Next, fill out the application. The organization that offers your training (usually a school) has to fill out part of it, too. 
  3. Once you're done, you can upload it to your online account.
