If you receive a littering or trash disposal violation ticket from the District Court or Boston Municipal Court (BMC), you have 21 days to pay it. This ticket can be criminal or civil.
Penalties for criminal tickets include:
- First offense — Up to $5,500
- Subsequent offenses — Up to $15,000 and potential seizure of your car
Penalties for civil tickets in a calendar year include:
- First, second, and third offenses — $20 and potential suspension of your driver's license for up to 7 days
- Fourth and subsequent offenses — $100 and potential suspension of your driver's license for up to 7 days
How to pay Pay a littering or trash disposal violation ticket
To pay the fine in person, you can appear in the District Court or Boston Municipal Court you received the ticket from and pay your ticket.
Pay the fine by mail by sending the correct amount to the address on the written notice.

If you don't pay the fine, the clerk will notify the officer, who will make an application for a criminal complaint and follow the procedure established for criminal cases, and will notify, if applicable, the registrar of motor vehicles or, the division of motor boats. If the court clerk grants the application for a criminal complaint after hearing, a complaint and summons for you to appear in court will be issued. If you don't respond to the summons, the clerk will mail you notice that an arrest warrant will be issued in 21 days.
