About the Bicycle Safety Pilot on the Harvard Bridge (Massachusetts Avenue Over the Charles River)

Learn more about this pilot that's now underway.

The pilot

MassDOT is collaborating with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the City of Cambridge, the City of Boston, and transportation advocacy groups to run a bicycle safety pilot on the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge Over the Charles River (Harvard Bridge).

On Monday, November 22, MassDOT launched the pilot, using construction equipment to quickly put the test conditions in place. We are reducing the number of vehicular travel lanes to one lane in each direction on the bridge while increasing the width of bicycle lanes to provide additional buffer space separating cyclists from cars and trucks.

The pilot period will run through the winter, as MassDOT and its partners evaluate data concerning safety, crashes, bicycle and traffic volume, and travel time of the MBTA Route 1 bus.
