The bridge is currently safe for travel, but considering the condition of the superstructure, MassDOT is carrying out this project with the following goals:
- Improve the safety and capacity of the bridge.
- Limit impacts to roadway users, abutting properties, and path networks.
This work will be accomplished with a new bridge superstructure design to last 75 years or more, a new riding surface, roadway lane striping, sidewalk, and bridge rails. Impacts will be limited with accelerated construction techniques, maintaining access to the MBTA station and garage, appropriate detour signage, and improved multimodal accommodations.
Construction activities are expected to begin during spring/summer 2026. MassDOT will be hosting a public information meeting on May 20, 2026 to provide more information.
MassDOT and HNTB developed the project design from 2021-2025. The MassDOT Highway Division is managing construction of the project. The project was awarded to Northern Construction in December 2026.
