Overview
The goal of this project is to address roadway safety, provide accessible pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and improve traffic flow. The project intends to reduce the likelihood of fatal and injury crashes and to continue lowering vehicle speeds in conjunction with the permanent Road Diet. This project will also address non-ADA compliant pedestrian and cyclist accommodations.
Pedestrian and cyclist improvements
Improved and accessible pedestrian and bicycle facilities will be provided within the project limits. This will include accessible ramps and a new Shared Use Path.

Final design
Background
The intersection of Randolph Ave. (Rt. 28)/Chickatawbut Road ranked 7th out of 200 in the latest listing of most dangerous intersections in the state. There have been 188 vehicle crashes between 2016 and 2022; with 49% being left-turn crashes. A 2016 Road Safety Audit (RSA) identified problems in the intersection and recommended changes to reduce crashes. The RSA, and analysis of alternatives, has led to the proposed solution of a roundabout.
In addition, pedestrian and cyclist accommodations are not ADA-compliant and need improvement.
MassDOT conducted a Road Diet Pilot on Route 28 (Randolph Avenue) from Reedsdale Road to Chickatawbut Road from Fall of 2025 to Spring of 2026. The Road Diet achieved safety goals and was made permanent. Within the corridor, Route 28 now carries one lane in each direction. The roundabout design was updated to adapt to the new roadway configuration and is now a single lane roundabout with single lane approaches.
