About the Richmond Street bridge preservation project

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has completed preservation work on the Richmond Street Bridge over State Route 1A Northbound in Boston’s North End neighborhood.

This project returned the bridge structure to its original condition through repairs to the concrete superstructure and substructure, as well as upgrades to the bridge railing system. This preservation work has extended the life of the bridge and included sidewalk and road replacement in the bridge area that have improved pedestrian accommodations and conditions.

Crews worked on an accelerated schedule to minimize impacts to abutters and those traveling through the area. The project began in April 2025 and was completed in January 2026.
