About the Springfield – St. James Ave. and Tapley Street bridge replacements

Learn more about this Springfield project.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is advancing a project to replace three aging bridge structures along St. James Avenue and Tapley Street over I-291 and the CSX Railroad in Springfield. These bridges, originally constructed in the 1950s and 1960s, have reached the end of their service life and require full replacement to ensure long-term safety and reliability.

The project will modernize the surrounding roadway network to improve safety, traffic operations, and accessibility for all users. Key improvements include reconstructing the I-291 interchange at St. James Avenue into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), converting the St. James Avenue and Page Boulevard intersection into a roundabout, and upgrading pedestrian and bicycle accommodations throughout the corridor. In addition to replacing the bridges, the existing I-291 Off-ramp bridge to Page Boulevard will be removed as a result of the interchange reconfiguration.

This corridor is an important connection for local neighborhoods, businesses, and regional travel. These improvements are designed to make travel through the area safer and more reliable for everyone – whether driving, walking, or biking. The project will simplify how traffic moves through the interchange, reduce delays, and create safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

Public input will play an important role as the project moves forward, helping to refine the design and ensure it reflects the needs and priorities of the Springfield community.
