Making Roads Safer Across Massachusetts
With matching fund commitments of over $7.5 million to dozens of communities, Massachusetts was awarded $30.4 million through multiple rounds of Safe Streets and Roads for All—a U.S. Department of Transportation program that works to improve roadway safety and reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
These awards will fund transportation safety improvements statewide—including Franklin County, Southeastern Massachusetts, Merrimack Valley, and Greater Boston—making streets safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians across the Commonwealth.
- Improves roadway safety statewide
- Reduces serious crashes and fatalities
- Supports projects in communities across Massachusetts
"The availability of state matching funds is allowing us to put Franklin County's new Road Safety Action Plan into action. With this investment backing the Safe Streets for All award, we can work with Greenfield and Deerfield to test new street-crossing and traffic-calming improvements, learn what works, and identify solutions that can make roads safer for communities across the region."

Reducing Congestion on Cape Cod
Cape Cod Commission and the Town of Yarmouth secured $25 million through the U.S Department of Transportation’s BUILD grant program to reconstruct nearly three miles of Route 28 between Yarmouth and Barnstable. The Healey-Driscoll Administration invested $5 million in matching funds to the town for this federal program, representing a significant return on investment for Massachusetts.
The project will improve one of Cape Cod's busiest transportation corridors by reducing congestion, improving pedestrian and ADA accessibility, and addressing high-crash locations—making travel safer for residents and visitors alike.

Strengthening New Bedford's Port Infrastructure
The Healey-Driscoll Administration provided $18.1 million in matching funds to the City of New Bedford, helping the city win a $24.4 million federal Port Infrastructure Development Program grant to reconstruct and expand Leonard's Wharf.
The project will strengthen one of Massachusetts' most important maritime facilities by supporting commercial fishing, expanding port capacity, and improving infrastructure needed to maximize the potential for offshore wind energy production.
- Expands commercial vessel capacity
- Strengthens New Bedford's maritime economy
" The state's investment of $18 million to the Leonard's Wharf project was instrumental to our securing $24 million in additional federal funding. As America's top commercial fishing port, the Port of New Bedford plays an important role in America's food supply, while supporting nearly 7,000 jobs across Greater New Bedford. The state's investment in Leonard's Wharf exemplifies the type and level of support necessary for the continued success of the Port."
