Advice on hiring an LSP

Learn how to hire a Licensed Site Professional to assess contamination on your property.

Why you should hire an LSP

LSPs are environmental scientists or engineers who specialize in cleaning up oil spills and other hazardous materials.  If you have had a release reportable under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan or suspect that your property is contaminated, you are required to hire a LSP to obtain a professional estimate of the contamination.  LSPs will collect and analyze data to assess the extent of the contamination and advise you on the best way to remediate the site.

Hiring advice

Some tips you may want to follow when hiring a LSP are:

  • Search the LSP Board’s website listing of LSPs

  • Contact multiple LSPs

  • Get several estimates

  • State requirements applicable to your situation

  • Actions they are proposing to meet those requirements

  • Proposed work schedule

  • Deadlines and fees from MassDEP

  • Cost of the LSP and related services

  • Check references

  • Check the LSP Board website to ensure that the LSP has a valid license
