Examples of artificial reefs created in Dartmouth, Sculpin Ledge, and Yarmouth

Artificial reefs provide fish with habitat to shelter, feed, and spawn, and can mitigate for the loss of natural reef habitat. With guidance from the MassDOT partnered with the Division of Marine Fisheries to create artificial reefs by contributing used construction materials (demolished concrete, steel, and stone) when available. For example, in 2019 MassDOT donated used mini concrete barriers from a maintenance building demolition project in Taunton. The used material went towards creating reef habitat at locations off the coast of Massachusetts.
