Can I borrow an assistive technology device?
The Assistive Technology Device Loan Program allows you to borrow equipment, free of charge, for up to four weeks from the Assistive Technology Regional Centers (ATRCs) inventory.
As this inventory includes items from three Assistive Technology Regional Centers across different areas of Massachusetts, it's possible that the equipment you select might not be present at your local ATRC. In such cases, the staff at your local ATRC will reach out to you to explore alternative options.
How do I apply for a device loan?
Complete the device loan request form | Apply via phone or in person with the AT Regional Center |
---|---|
Print, fill, and mail the form; loans require a signed original request | Start the process over the phone or via fax with the ATRC, then mail the completed form |
All fields on the form must be filled; use a dash or N/A for items not applicable, incomplete forms are returned for completion.
After all completed forms are submitted and reviewed by ATRC staff, they will send out a confirmation with a shipping date. If a device is unavailable, alternatives are discussed.
How is delivery arranged?
Borrowers are encouraged to coordinate item pick-up/return to minimize delivery costs for the program.
If the device is shipped or delivered, consider the following:
- Items should be delivered and picked up at the same address, unless other arrangements are agreed upon before the initial pick-up or delivery.
- If no one is typically home during regular business hours, avoid using a home address on the request form. Instead, request delivery to an alternate address (e.g., family member's office) where someone can sign for the device.
- For deliveries to large facilities like hospitals or schools, provide the name of the responsible person to receive the loan package. Include specific department information and room numbers for accurate delivery.
What responsibilities and liability does a borrower have?
- Verifying loan package contents upon arrival; notify ATRC of any discrepancies.
- Financial responsibility for missing components; borrower must report issues promptly.
- Loss of device incurs financial liability; contact lending ATRC immediately.
- Theft is exempt if reported to police promptly with a copy provided to the ATRC.
- Not liable for normal equipment wear but must report issues promptly.
- Unauthorized repairs without ATRC consent are not allowed.
- Borrower is responsible for ATRC's software; copying is illegal.
- Non-compliance leads to loss of future program privileges.
- Complete and return Customer Satisfaction Survey with each loan; alternative formats available.
