What are DDS Assistive Technology Centers

What are the Assistive Technology Centers?

The DDS Assistive Technology Centers (ATC) provide individuals eligible for DDS services with assistive technology needs through consultation, modification and/or fabrication of assistive devices deemed necessary to increase an individual’s functional ability and personal safety.

Areas addressed include seating and mobility, aids for daily living, recreation, job accommodation, and environmental or equipment consultation to maximize independence and engagement in meaningful activities. The centers focus on ensuring that the assistive technology needs of individuals supported by DDS are properly prescribed, fitted, and utilized.

Assistive Technology solutions are addressed first through commercially available products that may be modified if required and appropriate. When this is not an option, solutions may be fabricated to meet the individual’s needs.

How are Assistive Technology services provided?

The four DDS Assistive Technology Centers (ATC), located in Worcester, Northampton, Wrentham and Danvers, have well-equipped evaluation/production facilities which permit work on a wide array of assistive technology (AT) devices. The Metro Region has a mobile van to address these needs.

Each center has Adaptive Equipment Designers that will consult and/or create a design solution. Some centers also have technicians, occupational therapist on staff, or adaptive clothing designers.

All AT Center staff collaborates and work closely with physical, occupational, and speech therapists, medical personnel, psychologists, residential staff and others to ensure that the individual needs are met in and effective and efficient manner.

How do I request to receive services?

  • If you are living in the community, at a vendor home, in shared living, or with family, please contact your Service Coordinator to be referred.
