Overview
PLEASE NOTE: This program is not currently accepting applications for funding.
The purpose of this grant opportunity is to assist local law enforcement agencies in their efforts to address critical unmet public safety needs in the community they serve.
All proposals must have a law enforcement, criminal justice type nexus and be structured with a primary focus on impacting a specific unmet public safety need in order to be considered for funding. Applicants may request funds for equipment, technology, services and activities aimed at:
- Prevention/Intervention,
- Diversion, and/or
- Suppression/Enforcement.
Priority areas include:
- Combatting Drug Use such as Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Heroin, and other Opioids
- Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence, and Sexual Assault
- Gang and Gun Violence
- Missing Person Cases
- Hate Crimes
- Technology Upgrades, Investigative Tools, and Protective Gear
- School Safety and Security
Please note that this funding is contingent upon the availability and release of funds from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance. Eligibility
Only a police department from a Massachusetts municipality (local unit of government) is eligible to apply.
State agencies are not eligible for this program, but may apply for the Byrne JAG State Agency Funding Opportunity.

Byrne JAG Federal Requirements for Body Armor - Any subrecipient awarded Byrne JAG funds to purchase body armor (such as bulletproof vests) must be prepared to provide the Office of Grants and Research with a certification to confirm that the law enforcement agency receiving body armor has a written “mandatory wear” policy in effect. This certification is required at the time of contracting and does not need to be submitted with the application.
