Child Passenger Safety Training Opportunities

Here you'll be able to find upcoming training classes in Massachusetts for child passenger safety.

Overview

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers up to age 4 in passenger cars. But up to 46% of car seats are installed incorrectly, putting children's lives and safety at risk.

Certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians are trained to install all kinds of car seats. The Office of Grants and Research has contracted with Baystate Health to provide certification and recertification trainings in Massachusetts to ensure that CPS technicians are available to help parents and caregivers in communities across the state. In addition, OGR provides funds to reimburse newly certified CPS technicians for their $95 certification fee.

OGR makes this program available through federal funds awarded by NHTSA.

Become a CPS Technician

At least 12 certification courses for new CPS technicians are held across Massachusetts each year, as well as recertification and renewal classes. Additional training opportunities may be made available for nurses, DCF staff, those serving children with special medical needs and others.

For information on how to get trained as a CPS Technician, to recertify, or to earn Continuing Education Units (CEU), please contact Mandi Summers of Baystate Children's Hospital at mandi.summers@baystatehealth.org or call (413) 794-6510.
