Storage Tank Painting?

We have been receiving many calls about contractors seeking certification in Storage Tank Painting. We would like to address this to eliminate any confusion. Storage tank painting is not a category of work that DCAMM identifies.

Painting – Definition per DCAMM Guidelines

Application of paint to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and preparation of such surfaces for the purpose of receiving a finish coat of paint, including such incidental or related work as is customarily performed by those in the painting trade.

Storage Tank Painting/Coating

There is a special process for these tanks for painting/coating. Protective coatings elongate the life of the storage tank, preparation can include sandblasting. The protective coating applied to the storage tank will consist of an epoxy type substance that coats the container.

Storage Tank Painting is NOT a category of work that DCAMM Certifies. This applies even if the tank is located inside a building. The work is not vertical building construction, and it does not fall under DCAMM’s definition for Painting. As such, these types of painting projects should not be put out to bid under Chapter 149.

If you have questions about any other Categories of Work or about the Certification process in general, please let us know and we will be happy to address them in a future Tip Sheet.
