Psychiatry & Psychology Training Directors

The purpose of the Department of Mental Health (DMH) Psychiatry and Psychology Training Program (DMH Training Program) is to establish pathways for psychiatrists and psychologists to work and develop careers in DMH and the Massachusetts public sector behavioral health system of care. Massachusetts behavioral health stakeholders and advocates have identified the recruitment of psychiatrists and psychologists particularly those of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds as a major workforce issue. Consistent with DMH’s workforce development goals, DMH expects its investment in training of future psychiatrists and psychologists to establish a regular and predictable workforce influx that will help keep DMH facilities appropriately staffed while building clinical expertise and leadership for the Massachusetts public sector behavioral health care system.

The DMH Training program is a partnership between DMH and several Massachusetts medical school affiliated hospitals which operate nationally accredited Psychiatry Residency programs and Psychology Internship and Postdoctoral programs. Each training program’s mission and practices must be consistent with the DMH vision, mission, service principles and Commitment to Race, Equity, and Inclusion.

The DMH Training program provides extensive training in delivery of evidence-based practices for engaging with and addressing the needs of people who are experiencing complex and serious mental illness. Working in the DMH community and inpatient clinical settings, trainees gain specialized skills in areas such as, but not limited to, forensics, neuropsychology, children and adolescents, transitional age youth, substance use, geriatrics, early psychosis and medical comorbidities. Two multi-disciplinary Autism Fellowships instill expertise in diagnosing and treating co-occurring autism spectrum disorders and mental illness. Learn more about our Autism Fellowships.

The DMH Training Program offers longitudinal training experience to a dedicated cohort of psychiatry and psychology trainees. Trainees with a commitment to public sector behavioral health participate in multiple DMH clinical rotations across different training years throughout their training experience. Longitudinal trainees receive extensive training in the multitude of roles and responsibilities that psychiatrists and psychologists carry out across the DMH system of care. In the later years of their longitudinal experience these trainees may assume leadership roles and gain experience in program evaluation and the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices.
