What can I do if my supervising licensee refuses to sign my Form 272?
Rules Governing Practice:
All persons, firms, and corporations … employing learners and apprentices shall keep, or cause to be kept, accurate and detailed records of such employment for no less than nine years.
If an employer fails to complete an “Employment Verification form”, the Apprentice may file a complaint against the licensee responsible for documenting his hours. Do so after receipt of the Employment Verification Form has been confirmed by mailing it certified return receipt to the employer and allowing 30 days for the employer to respond.
Can an out-of-state company become licensed to do business in MA via reciprocity?
The Board only has reciprocity with NH, and even that reciprocal agreement provides only for both Journeyman and Master licensure. The Board does not provide reciprocal licensure for companies. Business licenses must only be applied for by MA-licensed Master electricians, or by companies that retain a MA-licensed Master electrician as the Licensee of Record. Can I reciprocate my NH license, obtained via reciprocity from another state?
The reciprocal agreement between MA & NH, allows for those NH journeyman or Master licensees to acquire MA licensure ONLY if they acquired said license via examination in NH. If the license was gained via reciprocity or endorsement, they are not eligible to reciprocate licensure with MA.
I am licensed in another state; how can I become licensed in MA?
MA only has reciprocity with NH. To become a Journeyman, you must apply, sit for, and pass the exam. For your Journeyman application, your documentation of equivalent education must also accompany documented experience, per the regulations contained in 237 CMR 13.00, specifically 13.09. The candidate must submit their application after careful review of the regulations, ensuring they provide ALL required documentation as listed. Any out of state education, would need to be documented on the Out-of-State Education Program Form, and supplemented with additional required documentation per the regulations. How can I apply for MA licensure if I am a licensed electrician in another country?
Any out of country licensee, must refer to the regulations contained in 237 CMR 13.00 on how to document their education and experience in that country, as meeting the requirements for examination. Generally engineering education is not accepted towards electrical licensure. There are some components of coursework in electrical engineering programs that might satisfy some of the 600hr educational program, but any request for international course credit would need to adhere to 237 CMR 13.07. As for the documentation of the necessary 8000hrs. of work experience to be eligible to sit for the exam, the candidate must also refer to the same regulations contained in 237 CMR 13.00, specifically 237 CMR 13.08, on how to document it properly. Please note, in no case shall an applicant for licensure receive credit for the education or experience unless such education and experience was based on the National Electrical Code then in effect, an International Electrical Code then in effect, or related adopted standards acceptable to the Board. In addition, all candidates for licensure must document completion of the required 15 Code Update class, given by a Board-approved provider. Can I use my military education and experience toward requirements for licensure in MA?
Yes, but a thorough read of the regulations will guide you through the requirements for documentation. Per 237 CMR 13.00, particularly 13.10, the Board has established the requirements for documentation as well as maximum thresholds (13.11, & 13.12) for credit based on the education and experience in the military:
- Applicants for licensure with education instruction and work experience while serving must submit a breakdown on discharge papers (currently forms DD214 and DD215).
- Documentation must be submitted on military stationary. Such documentation must include a statement that reads, "This certifies that the subject individual has worked as (indicating the title of the position) performing (indicate the specific work performed) in accordance with the provisions of the (National Electrical Code or International Electrical Code) for the period (date of commencement) to (date of completion).”
How can I obtain DAS Approval of my out of state education?
The Board does not register apprentices. Rather, when the applicant who has out of state education or experience they wish to document as equivalent to the required 600hrs (education) and 8000hrs (experience), they should refer to the regulations contained in 237 CMR 13.00, specifically 13.09. What are the expiration dates for my work and/or education hours when applying for licensure?
- Work experience will be creditable so long as it was obtained within 20 years of the date of application (i.e. if an application is dated March 1, 2020, work experience earned since March 1, 2000 will be creditable for the purpose of qualifying for examination).
- Education will generally be creditable for 20 years, calculated starting from the date the educational program begins (e.g. an electrical program commenced on Jan. 1, 2018 and successfully completed will remain creditable for the purpose of qualifying for examination until Jan. 1, 2038).

How can I become a licensed Master, if I am licensed as a Master in another state (other than NH)?
MA only has reciprocity with NH. In order to become a Master, you must first start by applying for your Journeyman license, then sitting for and passing the exam. Once passed and licensed, you may then apply for the Master exam, as the requirement to be a Journeyman for a year can be waived with the proof of Master Licensure in said other state. With your application for Master licensure, you must document completion of either a Board-approved 150 Master course, or an equivalent 150hr course from an out of state provider. For both your Journeyman and Master applications, your documentation of equivalent education must also accompany documented experience, per the regulations contained in 237 CMR 13.00, specifically 13.09. In addition, you must submit proof of completion of the 15hr CE code update course from a Board-approved provider, per 237 CMR 13.05.
