What you need
Before applying, you should review the requirements for becoming a licensed electrician. This includes reading the regulations and the Candidate Information Bulletin.
How Do I Qualify?
To qualify for the exam, you must:
- Complete an education program at a Board-approved school
- Take code-specific continuing education
- Gain the required work experience
- Submit your online application to PSI, the Board’s vendor, before scheduling your exam. The qualifications depend on the type of license you're applying for.
Journeyman Electrician
- Education: 600 hours of Board-approved education.
- Continuing Education: 15-hour Code-Update Class.
- Experience: 8,000 hours of work over at least 4 years under a licensed Massachusetts Journeyman.

Master Electrician
- Requirements: Must have a Massachusetts Journeyman license, at least 1 year of work experience, and 150 hours of Board-approved education.

- Approved Master or Systems Contractor Program Form
- Out-of-State Education Program Form
- Out-of-State Practical Experience Form

Systems Technician Exam
- Education: 300 hours of Board-approved education.
- Continuing Education: 15-hour Code-Update Class.
- Experience: 4,000 hours of work over at least 2 years under a licensed Massachusetts Systems Technician or Journeyman Electrician.

- Requirements: You need a Massachusetts Systems Technician license, at least one year of work experience, and 75 hours of Board-approved education.

- Out-of-State/Country Applicants: Review the eligibility requirements and regulations before applying to PSI.
- Reciprocity Agreement: Massachusetts has a reciprocity agreement with New Hampshire. If you're applying for reciprocal licensure, check the regulations before using the Board’s ePLACE portal.
- Military Applicants: If you have military education or experience, check the eligibility and credit limits before applying to PSI. Check the regulations here.

Application fees:
- Submit the total fees listed in the table below with your application to PSI.
- Payment in the form of money order or cashier’s check (no cash or personal checks accepted).
- Note: These fees do not include your licensing fee. Refer to the Candidate Information Bulletin for more details.

Re-examination Fees:
Re-examination fees are based on the portion of the exam that you are retaking. The total for both portions is $135.
How to apply
As of 6/1/25, ALL applications must be submitted online to PSI.
Any and all applications mailed or emailed after 5/31/2025 will be returned to the applicant in the manner received.

Application checklist
Complete this checklist BEFORE you submit your application.
- School/Education Form(s) (e.g., 222, 223, 224, 225, or Out-of-State Form)-Please be sure to only utilize those forms needed to document your education, as not all forms may be applicable for you.
- Include the applicant's name and the program.
- Indicate the total number of education hours.
- Ensure the school seal and authorized representative’s signature are present.
- Work Experience Form(s) (e.g., Form 272 or Out-of-State Form)
- Fill in all dates, including the end date (using "present" is not acceptable).
- Include the supervising licensee’s signature and Massachusetts license number.
- Provide employer information with their signature and license number.
- Clearly indicate the time worked in years, months, and days.
- Specify the total hours worked.
- CORI Form
- Ensure it is legible, signed, and notarized.
- 15-Hour Continuing Education Completion Certificate
- Passport-Style Photo
- Veteran Credit
- Attach DD214 if applicable.
- Military Spouse Affidavit
- Attach if applicable.
