What you need   for Apply for an Individual Electrical or Systems License

Before applying, Candidates must be readily familiar with the requirements to become a licensed electrician by reading the regulations, and Candidate Information Bulletin. The Electrical profession includes Journeyman Electricians, Master Electricians, Systems Contractors, and Systems Technicians, which are all regulated by the Board of State Examiners of Electricians.

How do I qualify?

Prior to applying for examination you must complete the related education program at a Board-approved school, code specific continuing education and  obtain electrical work experience as outlined in the regulations above. The Application is submitted to PSI (the Board’s 3rd party vendor) before approval to schedule and take the specific exam which includes a written/theory and practical portion. Here is a breakdown of the qualifications by each license type:

Journeyman Electrician 

  • Applicants must have 600 hours of Board-approved education, a 15hr Continuing Education Code-Update Class from a Board -approved Provider, and 8000 clock hours work experience over not less than 4 years, under the direct supervision of a Massachusetts licensed Journeyman.

Master Electrician

  • Applicants must have a MA Journeyman license, having worked for at least one year and 150 hours of Board-approved education.  

Systems Technician exam qualification

  • Applicants must have 300 hours of Board-approved education, a 15hr Continuing Education Code-Update Class, and 4000 clock hours systems work experience over not less than 2 years under the direct supervision of a Massachusetts Systems Technician or Journeyman electrician. 

Systems Contractor exam qualification

  • Applicants must have a MA Systems Technician license, having worked for at least one year and 75 hours of Board-approved education. 
  • Persons who wish to apply with out of state/country education and/or experience must refer to regulations on eligibility requirements before submitting to PSI.
  • Massachusetts currently has a Reciprocity agreement with New Hampshire. Persons who wish to apply for reciprocal licensure, must refer to regulations on eligibility requirements, before submitting an application on the Board’s ePLACE portal.
  • Persons who wish to apply for examination with Military education and/or experience must refer to regulations on eligibility requirements and credit limits before submitting to PSI.

Applicants must submit the total fees from the table below with the application to PSI (No cash or personal checks allowed). These
fees do not include your licensing fee. See Candidate Information Bulletin. Money Order or Cashier’s Check also accepted.

Re-examination Fees:
Re-examination fees are based on the portion of the exam that you are retaking. The total for both portions is $135.

  • Appropriate School/Education Form(s) (i.e., 222, 223, 224, 225, or Out-of-State Form)

    • School seal & signature of authorized school representative.
  • Work Experience Form(s), either Form 272, or Out-of-State Form

    • Employer information with signature and license number indicated.
    • Form indicates time worked in years, months, & days.
    • Form indicates total hours worked.
  • CORI Form (legible, signed, and notarized).
  • 15hr. CE Completion Certificate.
  • Passport-style photo.
  • Correct Fee is attached, or Credit Card information included (no cash).
  • DD214 is attached for veteran credit (if applicable).
  • Military Spouse Affidavit (if applicable).
  • ADA request for Accommodation form and documentation (if applicable).
  • Out of State License Verification documentation (if applicable).
