Foster Child Grant Eligibility and Application

Foster child grant awards can be for up to $3K per semester (max of $6K per school year) and can be used to pay for tuition, room/board, and fees.  Awards are made based on demonstrated need and available funding.  Students can reapply each school year for up to 5 years.

Following are the eligibility rules:

AgeUnder the age of 25 as of the application date
Citizenship/Residency
  • US citizen or eligible non-citizen under Title IV regulations
  • Permanent legal resident of Massachusetts 
School Enrollment
  • Full time (12 credits or equivalent) at any public/private college, university, or vocational school that is FAFSA eligible (in our out of state)
  • In good standing and making satisfactory academic progress as defined by your school's program 
Previous Education
  • High school diploma or GED/HiSET certificate
  • Have not yet earned a baccalaureate degree 
Foster Care ExperienceIn DCF custody via care and protection (C&P) petition until 18 and unable to return home
Other Requirements
  • Submitted FAFSA application (and reflects a MA address) or a MASFA alternative application for undocumented students
  • Not in default on any federal or state student loans
  • Not owed a refunded on any previous financial aid received
  • Do not need to pay back any previous financial aid received
  • Agree to participate in DCF offered educational support services
  • Agree that DCF can share application information with your school and MA Office of Student Financial Assistance 
  • In compliance with applicable law regarding selective service

Apply online 

Apply by July 1st prior to the fall semester.  Applications are also accepted on a rolling basis, including during the academic year, but please try to apply by July when possible.
