Housing Support

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. DCF has programs and services to help adolescents and young adults obtain stable housing.

DCF provides financial support to young adults as they leave care.  We can also connect you to other programs to help you afford housing. Talk to your DCF worker to learn more about getting a housing consult, get referred to a community provider, and more.  If you are a current or former foster youth you may also qualify for one of the programs below.

What
  • Housing vouchers for 36 months provided by a local or state housing authorities (with option to extend for 24 months if applicable)
  • May include different supporting services provided by community partners
  • Examples:  help with security deposits, college/job counseling, life skills education, and more 
  • Housing subsidies for young adults previously in DCF custody who maintain a connection to DCF
  • Assistance amounts vary based on academic year and the region in which you live
  • Participants can also be connected to resources for education, employment and financial assistance (if eligible)

Who

  • 18-24 years old
  • Were in foster care after age 16
  • Either left foster care or are currently in foster care and are scheduled to leave within 180 days
  • Are homeless or at risk of homelessness

You will need an eligibility hearing, conducted by the housing authority, if you are on a sex offender registry, have been arrested for manufacturing or producing drugs, or have pending criminal charges.

  • 18-23 years old (or completion of a bachelor's degree)
  • Have an open case with DCF
  • Are enrolled in a full time post-secondary education program, and maintain full time status for the duration of the subsidy
  • Have completed 12 or more academic credits (25% of required hours)
  • Willing and able to commit to weekly outreach meetings for the duration of the subsidy
  • Meet Housing Authority requirements
