Initial classification
When an individual in our custody first arrives, they will go through an initial classification. This is based on:
- How severe their current offense was
- How severe any prior convictions within the last 4 years were
- Any history of escapes or escape attempts
- Any prior violent behavior while in prison within the last 4 years
- Age
- Education
- Employment
This criteria is rated on a point-based system. Their recommended classification is decided based on the number of points.
For males:
- 6 or fewer points scores minimum custody or below
- 7-11 points scores medium custody
- 12 or more points score maximum custody
For females:
- 9 or fewer points scores minimum custody or below
- 10 or more points scores medium custody
We take into consideration many factors when determining a final placement, including but not limited to: enemies, program needs, medical/mental health needs, and available bed space. Although home area is also a consideration, it is often not possible to make that accommodation due to other factors that must take priority.
Reclassification
Custody levels are reviewed at least once a year via the reclassification process. This score is based on:
- How severe their current offense was
- How severe any of their convictions from the last 4 years were
- Any history of escapes or escape attempts
- Any prior violent behavior while in prison within the last 3 years
- Age
- If they have participated in programs
Males are also scored on:
- Number of guilty disciplinary reports within the last 12 months
- Their most severe guilty disciplinary report from the last 12 months
Females are also scored on:
- Number of guilty disciplinary reports within the last 6 months
- Their most severe guilty disciplinary report from the last 9 months
Classification levels may be reduced by:
- Participating in programs
- Work assignments
- Remaining disciplinary report free
Appealing a classification
An inmate can appeal their classification recommendation via the Inmate Placement Request/Appeal form. The appeal must be submitted within 5 business days upon receipt of the written classification recommendation. A commissioner’s designee will review the appeal and make a final decision.
