Ja’Maar “5IVE” Johnson was one of those people.
Ja’Maar was known for his warm heart, infectious smile, and his charismatic personality. He had a gift for connecting with people and making them feel welcomed. Those who knew him remember how he loved Dorchester, his sense of humor, his love for football and all his nicknames.
One of Ja’Maar’s greatest passions was music. Music wasn’t just something he listened to—it was part of who he was. He loved expressing himself through rap and creativity, using his voice to tell his story and connect with others. His passion for music continues to inspire the work of Mothers Against Drugs Inc. (MADMOMS) today.
Following Ja’Maar’s passing, his mother, Janice V. Johnson, made the courageous decision to donate his heart, giving the gift of life to someone else. While his heart continues to beat in another person, his love and spirit continue to beat within his family and the community he inspired.
To honor that extraordinary gift, Tuft Medical Center recorded the sound of Ja’Maar’s heartbeat and his moth created a deeply personal tribute titled “5 Heartbeats.” The song beautifully weaves together the recording of Ja’Maar’s actual heartbeat, one of his rap performances, and his mother’s singing. It stands as a powerful reminder that love never truly ends and that a legacy can continue.
