The Committee on Acupuncture (COA) is a committee of the Board of Registration in Medicine (BORIM), whose functions include promoting the safe practice of acupuncture in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts through the licensing of competent acupuncturists. The Committee on Acupuncture’s regulations, governing the practice of acupuncture in Massachusetts, include such topics as the educational and examination requirements for licensure, the safe practice of acupuncture, grounds for disciplining acupuncturists, the use of acupuncture assistants, and continuing acupuncture education.

The Public Member of the COA
The COA has 7 members appointed by the BORIM. Under M.G.L. c. 112, s. 149, each of the 7 Members has a specific function, with one member being from the general public. The Public Member shall not be engaged in or have a financial interest in the delivery of health services. This means that the Public Member CANNOT be a practicing acupuncturist or a physician. The Public Member is an unbiased representative of the community.

How many meetings does the Committee hold per year?
The COA meets five times a year. Occasionally, the COA may meet for an emergency or for a special meeting on a particular subject. Please see this year’s calendar.
How long is the duration of a typical committee meeting?
Most committee meetings run on average for 2 hours, although the duration of meetings can vary depending on the length of the meeting agenda.
What are the expectations of a committee member?
As a committee member, you have a responsibility to attend all meetings for the board. Prior to the meeting, you will be sent documents that will be discussed during the meeting. It is a requirement to review these documents and be prepared to discuss this information during the meeting. You will also vote on applications for licensure, enforcement actions, and policy matters.
Regardless of your background, the best preparation for assuming the responsibility of committee service is to gain a clear and thorough grasp of the acupuncture statute and its regulations. These materials will be provided to you.
What is the time commitment outside of meetings?
The size and complexity of committee agendas can vary. As a committee member, you should expect to commit an average of 6-8 hours outside of each meeting to read through the packet and be prepared for discussion on the meeting day.
What is the typical duration of a committee seat appointment?
The appointment with the COA is for 3 years. A member may apply for reappointment at the end of their term. There is no limit to the number of times a member can be reappointed.
Are board meetings held in person or virtually?
All COA meetings are held virtually at this time, with one meeting annually held both virtually and in-person at the Wakefield office, 178 Albion St., Suite 330, Wakefield, MA 01880.
Is this a paid position?
Serving on the Committee is an unpaid, voluntary position.
